Traffic Control Safety Training is the program of educational activities around road safety that is provided by Traffic Control Companies to children and young people in formal and community education settings – such as early childhood services, primary and secondary schools.
Traffic Control Safety Training encourages and supports the role that parents and carers play in helping their children to be safe road users and to learn about road safety. It seeks to develop the behaviors and attitudes for safe road use relevant to the development of children and young people as passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and as novice drivers.
In order to be effective, Traffic Control Safety Training must be evidence-based and match the child/young person's stage of development and level of independence as a road user. The aim of such training by Traffic Control Companies is to reduce the risk of injury and death to children and young people from road trauma and to lay the foundations for safe road use throughout life.
The delivery of road safety education is supported by the Road Safety Education Reference Group. The group is made up of representatives from Transport Accident Commission (TAC), Department of Education and Training and Public Transport. Each of these Traffic Control Companies takes responsibility to provide resources and programs to support all levels of road safety education.
